2019

Nature composes honey differently every year. The "Annual Honey 2019", which our bees collected in Heilbronn between April and July, is a mixture of blossoms from numerous plants such as fruit trees, raspberry, chestnut and lime tree. The colour of this rather light blossom honey varies slightly from glass to glass.

One day before the honey harvest, the beehives are prepared for the extraction of the honey:

After the barbecue in the evening, a small dessert is quickly stolen directly from the beehive. Delicious! Before the harvest the honey has to be dried by the bees. One can be curious about the honey of 2019.

After the spring was a total failure in terms of honey, it is now buzzing heavily in the lime trees in Heilbronn's city centre, and the hivescale shows daily weight increases of almost 2 kg.

HoneyPi is a smart beehive scale for do-it-yourself construction, based on the single-board computer "Raspberry Pi". Sensors measure the weight of the beehive as well as other variables such as temperature, humidity and air pressure and can be visualized live on the Internet, e.g. on a smartphone. At defined events, e.g. a swarm exit, a message is sent to the smartphone. This IoT ("Internet of Things") device is an open-source project, so that the system can be flexibly expanded as required,...

On Saturday, after a cool and rainy week, a bee colony decided to swarm. Looks like the garden beekeeper missed a swarming cell after all. Saw it, found the queen sitting in front of the hive (she is somewhat disabled to a certain extent and therefore cannot fly properly), put her in the entrance hole where she disappeared as quickly as possible. The stinging bees said "Come back sisters, mummy is in here", and after half an hour everything was as if nothing had ever happened. One thing is for...

Pictures like these are the reason why at present a check of the broodcombs should take place every 7 days. A swarming colony creates masses of swarm cells in which young queens grow up. They are not always in such an exposed place and easy to find as in this picture. The super-organism honeybee follows its reproduction instinct: as soon as one of the cells is covered, the queen's departure with half of all bees can no longer be prevented.

Such a pollen trap is an amazing device: the bees have to squeeze their way into the hive through a perforated plate that is just big enough to fit through. The pollen panties are stripped off and fall through a grating into a drawer where the beekeeper can easily harvest the pollen. Since the bees themselves urgently need the pollen to feed the larvae, 2 of these pollen traps are placed in front of another of the 8 colonies every day. Tomorrow the honey rooms will be added.

From now on you can enjoy our honey for breakfast in this chic and extraordinary house directly on the BUGA grounds. Congratulations on the opening and we are looking forward to sweeten the start of the day for your guests with our first-class local honey and to put a smile on their faces :-)

On the first mild days in 2019, the garden beekeeper rejoices in the presence of 8 healthy bee colonies. The diligent bees are already collecting pollen, which they bring into the boxes on their hind legs to feed the young larvae. While the first early flowers are timidly sticking their heads out of the ground, the bees are already preparing for the big blossoming.
